PLCY201: Public Leaders and Active Citizens with Susannah Washburn

Updated: Dec 5, 2021

PLCY201 is the introductory Public Leadership Scholars course at UMD. In this class, we discuss complex moral issues and frame those issues into solutions. We also sit down with leaders across multiple fields, and use their perspective to understand our own leadership stories and how to best use our talents in our style of leadership.

In this position paper, I was assigned to argue in the affirmative for whether guns should be allowed on college campuses. This was initially difficult, as I personally am for gun control, and allowing guns on college campuses can cause a lot of problems to arise. But I had to play devil's advocate and I feel that I did a pretty good job towards that end. Completing this assignment taught me how to properly develop an argument regardless of whether I personally agreed or not. Learning to analyze an issue from a different perspective is a skill that I think more people need to develop in order to foster an environment for civilized debate.
